Canberra residents were shaken this weekend after police arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the discovery of multiple pipe bombs scattered throughout Belconnen. According to ACT Policing, the man allegedly pilfered materials from the local Bunnings hardware store to construct these dangerous explosives.
Detective Sergeant Samuel Harris addressed the media on Sunday, stating that the suspect, already known to law enforcement, was apprehended following a joint effort between police and concerned citizens. "Police do not believe the incident to be terrorism related," Harris emphasized. "At this time we haven’t identified any motivation, but we are confident it’s not related to terrorism."
Authorities believe the man acted alone in creating and distributing the pipe bombs throughout the community. And this is the part most people miss... the investigation is ongoing, and further charges are highly probable. Both detonated and undetonated pipe bombs were recovered, underscoring the very real danger posed to the public.

The investigation began following the discovery of fifteen pipe bombs near Lake Ginninderra, specifically between Joynton Smith Drive and Ginninderra Drive. This sparked immediate concern and a rapid response from law enforcement.
Police identified the 41-year-old man as a person of interest early in the investigation. It is alleged that he both purchased and stole components from a Belconnen store – Bunnings – to assemble the pipe bombs.
On Saturday, January 17th, officers executed a search warrant at the man's Belconnen residence. While he wasn't present at the time, police allegedly found items consistent with pipe bomb construction. Later that evening, police located and arrested the man at a unit in Gungahlin.
He now faces charges including the unauthorized manufacture of a prohibited dangerous substance, possession of a prohibited weapon, and theft. A police spokesperson reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and that additional charges are anticipated. They also stressed, "Police do not believe the incident to be terrorism related."
