The College Football Playoff (CFP) is facing a controversial decision! Sources reveal that the CFP will stick with a 12-team format for the 2026 season, despite the growing buzz around a potential expansion.
ESPN's Pete Thamel has the inside scoop: SEC commissioner Greg Sankey advocates for a 16-team model, but Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti has a different idea. Petitti is on board with a 16-team format, but only if Sankey agrees to a 24-team field after three years. Talk about a negotiation tactic! However, Sankey isn't ready to commit to that just yet, according to multiple sources.
The stalemate between the Big Ten and SEC has led to the expected outcome of maintaining the 12-team format. Interestingly, CFP leaders haven't opposed this decision, considering the system is still in its early stages. But here's where it gets intriguing: the Big Ten wants to observe how the selection committee evaluates teams this fall, especially with the ACC and SEC's transition to nine-game league schedules. Will this lead to more two- and three-loss teams making the cut?
Let's rewind to March 2024. The CFP and ESPN signed a lucrative deal, securing ESPN's exclusive media rights until the 2031-32 season. In this agreement, the 10 FBS conferences and Notre Dame's athletic director granted significant control over the playoff format to the Big Ten and SEC. A 12- or 14-team field was envisioned, but the idea of a 16-team playoff gained traction recently.
ESPN, being the sole rights holder, set a deadline for the CFP to decide on its format by December 1, 2025. However, the SEC requested an extension, which was granted until January 23. And this is the part most people miss: the CFP executive director, Rich Clark, stated that this deadline will recur annually for any format changes.
Although the team count remains unchanged, the selection process will see some tweaks. This year, the Power 4 conference champions and the top-ranked Group of 6 conference champion, now including the revamped Pac-12, will secure their spots. Notre Dame is also guaranteed a spot if they rank within the selection committee's top 12. Imagine if these rules were in place last season—Duke and Notre Dame would've made the cut, leaving Miami, the national title contender, on the sidelines.
